Aman-i-Khás

A Mughal-inspired tented camp on the edge of Ranthambore National Park

Aman-i-Khás is a wilderness camp in a rugged brushwood forest on the edge of Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan, in the Aravalli hills near Sawai Madhopur, and the name joins the Sanskrit-derived word for peace with the Hindi word for special. Guests stay in fourteen tents inspired by the travelling tents of the Mughal era, each raised on a concrete plinth with canvas walls and cotton drapes that separate the sleeping, dressing and bathing areas. The Tented Pavilions measure 108 square metres under six-metre canopies and have king-size beds, twin writing desks and a free-standing bathtub, while a sundeck gives views across the surrounding landscape. Three further tents, the Dining Tent, the Lounge Tent and the Spa Tent, are arranged around an outdoor fireplace that is lit each evening and serves as the camp's informal gathering place. Meals follow a menu that changes daily, drawing on Indian and Western dishes prepared from fresh seasonal ingredients, and private dinners can be arranged outdoors. Spa treatments, yoga and a pool in a grove of trees fill the hours between drives, and nearby forts and rural villages can be visited with the camp's guides. The days are built around twice-daily guided safaris in open-top vehicles into Ranthambore, home to Bengal tigers, leopards, deer and langurs, and the camp is open from October to May, the best months for wildlife viewing.

What we love about Aman-i-Khás

  • Mughal-inspired tents

Fourteen canvas tents on raised plinths are laid out in the style of Mughal travelling tents, with high canopies and drapes that divide each tent into separate living areas.

  • An evening fire at the centre

The Dining, Lounge and Spa tents are set around an outdoor fireplace that is lit each night and brings guests together after the day's safari.

  • Wellness in the wilderness

A dedicated Spa Tent offers treatments that draw on Ayurveda, with yoga sessions and a pool set in a grove of trees for the hours between drives.
